Daifuku-ji Temple, also known as Gake Kannon, is built along a steep cliff face. The name Gake Kannon combines the Japanese word for cliff (gake) and the Japanese name for the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy (Kannon). The temple’s history dates back to 717 when the Buddhist Priest Gyoki carved an eleven-faced Kannon into the bluff.
