Here at Takabe Jinja, Japan’s only shrine dedicated to the God of Cooking, this Knife Ceremony, or Hōchōshiki, takes place three times per year. Last May, we witnessed Chef Hakushin Nagashima prepare a sea bream while adhering to this centuries-old ritual’s golden rule: he never touches the sacred fish with his hands, not even once. Since the hands are considered impure, the chef employs carefully choreographed maneuvers as to only touch the fish with a knife and chopsticks.

This ritual originated in the 9th century imperial court, but the history of how this shrine came to honor the god of cooking is said to date back 1,800 years, long drawing aspiring chefs and food makers to its hallowed grounds.

The ceremony is held every year on May 17, October 17, and November 23, so you still have two more chances to see it this year.

Suzusen is celebrating 100 years of making Maiwai, a regional Japanese craft from Chiba Prefecture. Thanks to fourth-generation artisan Riki-san, we can learn about the history of Maiwai and appreciate these works up close. Maiwai are jackets which are made using a textile dyeing art, and were once given by owners of fishing boats to their crew as a sort of bonus after a season of plentiful catches. At one time there were about 50 Maiwai dyeing studios here in Chiba, but now only a couple remain in operation. Please see Suzusen’s Instagram for info about their handcrafted goods and workshops: @suzusen1925

Haraoka Pier, Haraoka Beach, Minamiboso City, Chiba
Access: A 10-minute walk from JR Tomiura Station

You’ll find the Boso Peninsula’s most picturesque pier extending toward the sea from a quiet beach that’s located just beyond the typical Tokyo-area tourist trail. This part of Chiba is accessible by train on the JR Uchibo Line, and is known for offering seaside views of where Tokyo Bay opens up into the Pacific Ocean.

On clear days at Haraoka Pier, you can see Mt. Fuji in the distance across the sea, a scene that tends to get even more stunning around sunset when the colors of the evening sky outline the mountain’s silhouette on the horizon. This spot has provided the setting for numerous photographs, commercials and films, and although it may be a humble destination, it tends to keep a special place in the hearts of those who visit.

There’s a place in Japan named “Utopia” and it’s one of my favorite hidden gems outside Tokyo. Ubara Utopia, or Ubara Risokyo in Japanese, got its name in the early 1900s when it was branded as an area for vacation homes. Today, visitors can trek the short Ubara Utopia hiking trail, and enjoy these stunning ocean views. The walking course starts from JR Ubara Station, making it an accessible day-trip destination. Would you take the trip from Tokyo to Utopia?
